| Description | The article surveys the role of prominent nationalists such as Viktor Dyk, Karl Hans Stobl and Robert Hohlbaum and their novels Můj přítel Čehona(1925), Wir haben gebauet(1923) and Grenzland(1921) in radicalization of both Czech and German nationalists after the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. Their inability to see beyond the horizon of national interest as well as their inability to appreciate the worth of the so called "national enemy" has led to the vulnerability of both nations to the rise of the great totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. Although the authors have fallen into oblivion long ago, the stereotypes established in their novels live on. |
