Description | Asthma is the most common chronic disease complicating pregnancy. It has been reported to affect up to 8.4 % of pregnant women. The course of asthma seems to be unpredictable due to the change of asthma severity in approximately in two-thirds of women during pregnancy. In our study, 182 asthmatic pregnant women were assessed and treated in prospective manner. The results indicate that patients that are monitored before pregnancy have lower asthma severity than those not monitored. The results suggest that patients with stabilized asthma condition prior to pregnancy tend to have better asthma control in the last trimester. The study shows a significant relationship between asthma control and respiratory tract infection, rhinitis and sinusitis. In comparison to average incidence rate in the Czech Republic, no significant difference was found between the incidence of birth defects and delivery via per sectionem caesarea in asthmatic women. However, the incidence of spontaneous abortion in asthmatic women was more frequent. The study further indicates that all women in childbearing age should be monitored and should receive proper asthma treatment depending on the severity of their asthma condition. This is necessary to assure better asthma control in the last trimester and to achieve better labor and perinatal outcomes. Finally, the algorithm of asthma management during pregnancy was proposed. |
