Description This study examines the relationships between domains of physical self-concept and self-esteem in a sample of obese women and men. The research is based on 72 participating obese individuals, 53 women and 19 men, aged 17–71 years (the average age was 45 years). We found that women judge their competence to be low in all the studied domains of physical self-concept while men consider themselves competent in sport and physical strength. The lowest values for both sexes emerged in the domain of physical attractiveness. All obese individuals are dissatisfied with their body – they would like to be slimmer than their perception of proper body size. They perceive the contemporary ideal of beauty to be thinner than their subjective physical ideal that they would like to achieve. The results show that respect for the physical self is important for womens self-esteem, and the closest relationship was found between body-esteem and physical strength or physical condition. Mens self-esteem seems to be independent on the body-satisfaction.
