Description | The chapter presents an attempt to use J. C. Alexander's model of inclusion to explain urban riots in Paris in November 2005. Information about events as described in Czech online news and in discussions in the French journal Le Monde (electronic version), is followed by an overview of different authors' research findings about French “banlieues” (Loic Wacquant 2006; Christian Rinaudo 1999; Paul Silverstein and Chantal Tetreault 2005). Their analyses help understand the ambiguous relation between representations of riots in media and social situation at Parisian outskirts. Attempts to apply J. C. Alexander's model to explain the events eventually appear as problematic. Confronting the model with Michel Maffesoli's theory of neotribalism (1996), the article raises questions about basic assumptions of Alexander's approach and about the meaning of his concept of “primordial characteristics”. |
