Description Life history patterns and feeding of Polycentropus flavomaculatus (Trichoptera) larvae were studied from May 2004 to March 2005. The larvae were collected monthly from a riffle stretch of the Loučka River (Dolní Loučky, Brno – venkov, Czech Republic). A one-year life cycle was recorded but the development of larvae was not well synchronized. As a result, the population of P. flavomaculatus was formed by a mosaic of different instars, which enabled the species to exploit the environment efficiently and, therefore, the abundance was high (the average density was 1.370 larvae/m2). The food composition of different instars was studied using preparations of the contents of larval proventriculi, II. – V. instars were evaluated. The larvae fed as predators or scavengers, the share of non-animal food was lower than 20% at all instars.
