Description | In 1999, skeletal remains of over a thousand individuals were excavated on Antonínská Street in Brno. This osteological material was found in the city cemetery Malá Nová, where inhabitants of Brno were being buried (1785 to 1883). The skeletal material was submitted to medical and anthropological analysis using standard anthropometric methods. Paleopathological diagnosis was based on standard macroscopic, radiological and histological examination. In this study, we present a part of paleopathological research focused on presence of symptoms of hematological, metabolic and endocrine diseases. In 10.8% of skeletons were found out cribra orbitalia as symptoms of supposed anemia. Symptoms of metabolic diseases were found out only on the skeletons of children. Traces of rickets were found out in 0.5 %, in two skeletons has been suspected diagnosis of scorbut. Fontal internal hyperostosis diagnosticed on 5.2% of female skulls is possible to consider as a result of endocrine disorder. |
