Description | Amphibian populations are declining worldwide, evidently as the implication of environmental contaminants and infectious diseases. Generally, oxidative stress is considered to be one of the major toxicity mechanisms, however, only few amphibian studies are dealing with detoxification responses besides standard parameters. The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of widespread environmental pollutant in standard acute test using Xenopus frogs supplemented with the measurement of biomarkers of oxidative stress. Sublethal effects on modulation of antioxidative and detoxification compounds (glutathione, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase and peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase and cytochrome P450 as EROD) were observed. Oxidative stress expressed as the potential lipid and protein dissociation was determined. Lower effect concentrations of biomarkers of oxidative stress preceding any sign of toxicity were found.
