Description In vitro cultures of pea plants (Pisum sativum L., cv. Garde) were used for assessment of a production of ethane, ethylene and CO2 after 1, 2, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days of cultivation in MS-medium treated with fluoranthene (FLT; 0.1, 1 and 5 mg/L). Results demonstrated, that the presence of fluoranthene affected negatively the production of stress indicators. Increasing concentration of FLT led to an increase in ethylene and ethane production. The CO2 production was rising at first, particularly in plants exposed to 1 and 5 mg/L FLT. Subsequent drop of CO2 concentration could be connected to its utilization in photosynthesis and to the FLT-caused inhibition of biomass production, especially in plants exposed to 5 mg/L FLT. Ethylene, ethane and CO2 production could be used for an early indication of stress effect of this xenobiotic compound.
