Description | Data presented in this communication indicate that MSF is constitutively expressed by keratinocytes in culture, but is rendered functionally inactive by the co-secretion of an inhibitor (MSFI). This inhibitor was identified as NGAL. MSFI activity was found in NGAL obtained from four different sources: keratinocytes, neutrophils and recombinant protein isolated from both procaryotic and eucaryotic sources. This is a novel activity of NGAL which does not seem to be mediated by previously reported mechanisms, such as iron transport or direct protein-protein binding. |
