Description In this paper we are trying to offer the concept of political cleavages transformation which would be applicable to the conditions of party systems and society in Central and Eastern Europe. Socioeconomic cleavage and nationalist cleavage we regard as the most widespread cleavage transformation. Besides that we identify dispute about the form (character) of the regime at the beginning of democratic transition or, after its completion, possible residual cleavage communism versus anti-communism. There can also occur revitalisation of some historical cleavages as town versus village or state versus church. The dominant role of socioeconomic cleavage transformation in the given party system creates an important precondition of the given party system consolidation. At present the party spectrum is concentrated round the axis the Left – the Right. The dominance of nationalist cleavage transformation is connected with the existence of strong, primary ethnically-oriented and nationalistically-oriented parties. There is a strong probability, that the party systems with this prevailing cleavage will experience more complicated development and bigger instability of individual party participants.
