Description From the viewpoint of material damage and of loss of human lives, floods are the most destructive natural extreme in Moravia and Silesia. For the rivers Bečva (Teplice nad Bečvou), Morava (Kroměříž, Strážnice), Svratka (Židlochovice), Dyje (Trávní Dvůr), Opava (Opava) and Odra (Bohumín), the floods are studied in the period of systematic hydrological observations and according to the documentary sources (their causality, seasonality, extremity, spatial and temporal variability). Selected extreme floods (VIII 1880, VII 1903, VIII-IX 1938, VII 1997, III-IV 2006) are described in more detail. From the temporal and spatial aspect, flash floods are analysed, including detailed description of selected events in the 20th century. Flood damages and impacts on human society in past and today are also assessed.
