Description | The aim of this study was to investigate fish community in a wide spectrum of various biotopes in the floodplain of the middle Gambia River at Niokolo Koba National Park in Senegal. Fish abundance and diversity of fish community were studied and compared in four dominating habitat types: main river channel, small tributaries, oxbow lakes and periodic pools. A total of 61 fish species was observed. Fish community structure differed among the habitats and each habitat was characterized by one or more specialized species. Small, shallow temporary habitats were characterized by a high abundance of juvenile stages of several fish species, indicating their importance for fish reproduction and as nursery habitats. The fish abundance in small rivers and periodic pools was highly variable and related to the level of connection with permanent waters. |
