Description | Laser beam interaction with a material is used for local analysis, microanalysis, acquiring of depth profiles of structured materials and surface mapping. Laser ablation (LA) is used for generation of dry aerosol which is introduced into a plasma source, usually inductively coupled plasma (ICP) thus producing photons for optical emission spectrometry (LA-ICP-OES) or ions for mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Laser induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) is another technique based on optical emission of excited atoms and ions of a microplasma created over a sample surface as a consequence of the laser beam and sample interaction. Both techniques enable analyses of surface areas in diameters at least 5 micrometers up to several tenths of millimetres app. Crater depths are from the interval of hundredths or tenths of micrometers to tenths or hundredths of micrometers. LA-ICP-MS detection limits are about 1E-4 of mass percent by irradiated area. |
