Description Despite the widespread use of the term mainstream, it is not easy to qualify it in empirical terms. Based on cultural studies, this article develops a concept of mainstream youth culture through mapping relations between mainstream and youth culture, found in analyses of classical works on subcultures (CCCS) and clubcultures (MIPS). There is a gulf between the structural perspective conceptualizing youth as subcultures opposed to the mainstream dominant /middle class/ adult culture, and the cultural perspective seeing youth as clubculture formations to distinguish them from the mainstream pop culture. The article introduces a theoretical frame of a concept of mainstream youth culture through conjoining both structural and cultural perceptions. From this perspective the mainstream can no longer be seen as unified or monolithically Other. A concept of mainstream youth culture means a space where practices of social and cultural differentiation unfold.
