Description The exfoliative toxin A (ETA) is coded by the eta gene of some S. aureus prophage. The eta-positive S. aureus strains cause the serious disease named staphylococcal skin scald syndrome. ETA-negative strain SAU1039 was lysogenized by eta-phages and was converted into a producer of ETA. Our results indicate that ETA-converting B phages that morphologically resemble the phages of the family Siphoviridae seem to be the major mediators of the eta gene horizontal transfer among the S. aureus strains. We presented the comparative analysis and alignments of the set of the eta-positive strains that were isolated in Czech Republic over years 1998-2007.
