Description Microbial habitation in secondary cave fills, so called speleothems and its influence on these formations is becoming the limelight for many geomicrobiologists these days. Example of this is moonmilk which is not so often in the caves. Generally, the moonmilk is usually formed by carbonate minerals. The aim of our study was to prove the presence of microorganisms by cultivation and finally to characterize isolated strains, too. The moonmilk was sampled in 4 caves of the Moravian Karst: Horní v Chobotu, Císařská, Kateřinská and Suchožlebská zazděná. Isolated strains were characterized not only by key biochemical and physiological tests but also by whole-cell protein analysis by SDS-PAGE and ribotyping. Altogether 69 mainly psychrotrophic strains were isolated. All of the cultures except one (gram-positive pleomorphic rod) were gram-negative non-fermenting rods, fluorescent pseudomonads were the dominant group among isolated strains.
