Description | Introduction :Bilateral presence of cholesteatoma is observed in 4-17% of patients. Only in 1/3 of patients with unilateral cholesteatoma normal finding of contra lateral tympanic membrane can be observed. HRCT scan provides a lot of information about extent of disease, changes of osteous limiting of the middle ear and closely related structures. Materials and metods :HRCT scan was used to measure content of the air in this area (in cm3 +/- 0.1 cm3) in 3 observed groups: (A) volume of air in the ear with cholesteatoma; (B) in the contralateral ear without clinical signs of cholesteatoma; and (C) ) in the control group with intact middle ear. An average values were 1.1; 3.073, and 7.43 cm3. Conclusion : With statistical analysis of the measured values we have found out significant difference in air volume between particular groups. Radiologic finding of decreased pneumatisation of both ears is closely related with the disease pathogenesis and the contra lateral ear with low air volume is of high risk to develop this condition |
