Description | The poststructuralist emphasis on the discursive production of subjectivity represents, without any doubt, an invaluable inspiration for many current social theories. The text discusses the specific field of the application of poststructuralism to empirical studies of subjectivity, which connects the poststructuralist orientation with the tradition of discourse psychology. In this context, subjectivity is understood as an effect of the subject's positioning in a multitude of contradictory and unstable discourses. The author suggests, however, that there are some problematic consequences of this conceptualization, related to the explanation of the subject's stability and continuity. The partial integration of Foucalt's and Lacan's ideas enables the author to propose the desire for meaning as the principle of subjects' reproduction, i.e. also as the principle of their continuity. The relevance of this proposal is supported by the study of the re-production of gender subjectivity, which shows the instability of gender positions, but at the same time the stability of desire to be recognized as a specific meaning. |
