Description | The article analyses the problem of superiority of Confucius over Laozi or Zhuangzi in the work of Wang Bi and Guo Xiang. Two aspects of the problem are studied. Firstly, the article puts the problem into the context of Han dynasty exegesis of the official Canon, particularly the exegetical problem of Confucius' subtle words (weiyan). Reading the Laozi and the Zhuangzi as a part of the exegetical tradition is seen as the major development and turning point in scholarship initiated by the Learning of the Dark (xuanxue). Secondly, the development in the field of exegesis is paralleled to the changing concept of scholar. Again, the stress laid on the Laozi and the Zhuangzi by the post-Han scholars is regarded as crucial in this cultural development. |
