Description | The article deals with nest success and diet composition of the Tengmalm’s Owl in the Protected Landscape Area of Žďárské vrchy in the breeding season 2005. In total, 20 breeding attempts on 18 sites were recorded (Tab. 1), from that 13 were successful (Tab. 2), i. e. one fledgling has been reared per a nest at least. Laying of replacement clutch was observed in two cases. Nesting took place in nest boxes only three times, mostly natural tree holes were occupied. Tengmalm’s Owl most often occupied holes in beeches, only one was in spruce. There were produced four fledglings per a succesful nest on average (3.9; SD= 0.9). Prey remains were collected from 11 succesful nests in nest boxes and 1043 prey items was obtained in total (Tab. 3 and 4). The most important prey in the diet of Tengmalm’s Owl are Microtus voles. The abundance of Common Vole (Microtus arvalis) and short-tailed vole M. agrestis was almost the same (dominance 27.52% vs. 24.52%). The Common Shrew (Sorex araneus) (15.05 %) and the Bank Vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) (13.81%) also composed a relatively high proportion in the diet. Compared to the other studies on Tengmalm’s Owl diet from the Czech Republic, a higher proportion of the Water Vole Arvicola terrestris was found. Mammals composed 96.55% and birds only 3.45% of prey from all the vertebrates in the samples. The great importance to faunistic is the confirmation of the Alpine Shrew (Sorex alpinus) in the study area. |
