Description | High Mobility Group (HMG) proteins type B bind local DNA structures, promote DNA bending and interact with factors of the transcription, repair and recombination machineries. Arabidopsis thaliana genome encodes 7 HMGB proteins which differ in structure, expression pattern and DNA-binding properties. We observe that HMGB1 takes part in telomere maintenance. Plants lacking HMGB1 display telomere shortening and, consistently, overexpression of HMGB1 leads to telomere elongation. |
