Description Bisphosphonates are a relatively large group of drugs used for several decades to treat diseases with escalated osteoresorption, including tumor osteolysis. Their use today belongs among the standard treatment procedures for tumors metastases in bone, including multiple myeloma, as well as for Paget‘s disease and osteoporosis. Malignant hypercalcaemia is also their significant indication. Bisphosphonates, in particular nitrogen containing, have also serious side effects. As survival rates of oncological patients are improved due to the use of new anticancer drugs there is increasing emphasis on the quality of life of these patients. It is therefore necessary to select supportive bisphosphonates treatment with the least risk of serious complications. The following text provides a summary of the evidence of bisphosphonates‘ efficacy as well as an overview of their side effects.
