| Description | This paper reflects upon the symbolism and perception of swamps. It deals with the imaginative power of water as the defining principle influencing the artistic perception of swamps. It mentions the negative role of swamps in myths, legends and fairytales and its extension into our current day-to-day attitudes, which is illustrated on a case study of the relationship of rural dwellers to a local "swamp". In the conclusion H.D. Thoreau's and Aldo Leopold's positive assessments of swamps are outlined. |
