Description The paper analyzes the occurrence of interactive contact means in Czech and English parallel scripted dialogues. The focus of the study is the use of discourse markers, described in current pragmatic studies as language units with minimal propositional meaning whose main communicative function is to build interpersonal relations, to maintain the coherence and fluency of discourse, and to facilitate negotiation of meaning between communication participants. The study investigates the frequency of use and the extent of the functional equivalence of the Czech discourse markers no, ne, ale, tak, jo, víte, ano, and hm; and the English discourse markers well, oh, no, now, you see, you know, I mean, look, listen, yeah, and hm. The study also includes interpretation of discourse markers from the viewpoint of information structure; it indicates functional features that these particles share both with grammatical exponents of the verb and with certain frequency and modal adverbs and particles.
