Description This article deals with the issue of mainstream youth culture in the context of individualized society. The culture of young people has traditionally been theorised in comparison with the mainstream culture. As a result, nonconformity and rebelliousness are considered to be prime characteristics of youth. Paradoxically, recent studies have emphasised the absence of rebelliousness as the most common characteristic of contemporary youth along with increasing conformity to dominant values. This article focuses on the paradox of why, despite the unconventional appearance of young people on the surface, they are becoming increasingly conformist and conservative in their core values. The analysis suggests that this phenomenon might be explained in terms of the individualistically oriented values of young people. It may be that individualism became widespread in the daily lives of many young people to such an extent that it became the new conformity. This argument is explained through analysis of the changing value orientation among young people in Czech society in 1991, 1999 and 2008.
