Description | In a cross-test comprising 52 strains of Salmonella enterica, we discovered production of 14 salmonella phages. Phage plaques were turbid with varied diameter (ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 mm). Phage production was inducible with mitomycin C in 8 strains. Six phage producers showed lytic activity against E. coli and E. fegusonii strains. All phages had icosahedric heads and contractile tails and were therefore classified as phages belonging to the family Myoviridae. Sequence analysis identified phage 1 as the phage PsP3. Phages 9 and 10 were found to be almost similar based on their DNA restiction profiles, suggesting their phylogenetic relationship. All other phages were sequentially unique. Characterization of bacteriophages from the Salmonella genus classified them as Bradleys basic morphological type A (Myoviridae family). Using methods of molecular biology, sequence and phylogenetic relationships of these phages were determined. |
