| Description | Microscopic and chemical analysis of the non-metal parts of the coral necklace from the childs grave No. 78 showed four different materials. 2 beads were made from glass, 4 pieces were of carnelian, 5 pieces made of ceramics and 27 plus the fragments were of realgar. The beads from glass were highly corroded; they are very rare amongst the findings of the 11th Century in Slovakia. A big surprise is the discovery of realgar as a material of more than 27 tiny beads. Realgar belongs to the basic sulphurous ores of arsenic (As4S4). Due to the light impact the original red-orange colour changes from yellow to gray and the poison arsenic. The materiál is fading and stops being transparent. In the historic sources realgar is known as painters pigment; in Kostolany pod Tribečom is proved as the material for jewellery for the first time in the history of Europe. |
