Description The paper summarizes the main achievements in the field of historical climatology in Central Europe for the last 500 years. Historical climatology uses documentary evidence for climate reconstruction. Temperature and precipitation reconstructions based on documentary evidence are compared with those derived from natural proxies (tree rings). Results are discussed with respect to traditional paradigm of the last millennium climate that was outlined by H. Lamb already in 1960s. Positive and negative features of climate reconstructions that are based on documentary evidence are discussed (method of indexing, high and low frequency signal).
