Description Gregarines (Conoidasida, Gregarinasina) are a heterogeneous group parasitizing invertebrates and urochordates, and that are usually considered to represent the primitive members of Apicomplexa. As typical for apicomplexans, their epicyte consists of the plasma membrane and the inner membrane complex connected with numerous cytoskeletal elements such as the actomyosin complex, microtubules and the network of intermediate filamentous proteins. The aim of this study was to examine different morphological approaches and evaluate their use in the study of gregarine epicyte structure and mechanism of their cell motility.
