Description Cadmium is an important contaminant of our environment. Its increased content is found in the surroundings of industrial centers, especially near the production plants processing metals. It is also found in trace amounts in some plant and animal species. Cadmium belongs to the most important biocumulative elements. It is retained mainly in kidneys, liver and it can be retained and cause damage to testicles and ovaries. The presence of cadmium in an organism is harmfulm and undesirable as it has toxic, carcinogenic and terartogenic consequences. This chemical element from the 2nd group of periodic system was discovered in 1817 by Stromeyer and it was found as an impurity in zinc ores. We meet this toxic metal in our everyday lives by our active or passive, willing or unwilling inhaling of cigarette smoke. The bigger concentration of cadmium in ground was found in Slovakia in the central Spis region.
