Description The use of spatial information has become an important part of everyday life, though it is not always realized. The information is needed not only in daily activities, but especially in situations where its use is very necessary. Spatial data is often the only source of information that can eventually save human lives and property. This paper primarily describes the cooperation of intervening components of crisis management (the components of the Integrated rescue system), their communication and using of a common system. The structure of the Integrated rescue system, which is an effective tool in dealing with emergencies situations, was analyzed too. The detailed analysis of work processes in emergency management was the first step to suggest any useful recommendations for increasing the work efficiency. Many limitations, such as data accuracy and availability, were found at the regional Fire and Rescue Service, while observing the work of emergency operators. It was also confirmed that the used instruments are not frequently user friendly. Possibility of precise and quick solution is the most important feature of a tool used for cooperation between emergency troops in crisis situation. In general, real-time instant messaging and sharing all the information between the emergency troops to support decision-making processes is necessary to find the best strategy in effective dealing with crisis situations. Several tools and applications that achieve these aspects are described as a part of the analysis. Equally, the principle of such a geocollaboration tool has been tested in field experiment within the research project Dynamic Geovisualization in crisis management, which has been solved at the Masaryk University in Brno. All these knowledge and experience have been summarized to requirements that should be enabled by the geocollaboration tool. This paper reviews the previous work of our research team in the field of geocollaboration in crisis management.
