Description | Two studies of clitellate assemblages were conducted in Western Carpathians: on a large scale on 17 sites differing in their mineral richness, and on a small scale on two distinct spring fens: calcareous with tufa precipitation and a rich Sphagnum fen with calcitolerant Sphagna species. On a large scale (DCA analysis), the first gradient displayed changes in species richness and composition of assemblages with mineral richness and substrate characteristics. The second gradient can be explained as an increase in euryecious species towards fen sites with higher nutrient availability. On a small scale (PCA analysis), in the case of tufa forming calcareous fen clitellate composition was preferably influenced by season and discharge, conversely, in rich Sphagnum fen significant correlations were found with both axes: while the first ordination axis was correlated with the season similarly as in calcareous fen, second axis showed environmental gradient significantly correlated with distance from spring source, water pH, percentage of stones, and amount of POM in bottom substrate. |
