| Description | This book acts as a manual that defi nes units used for habitat mapping in the Czech Republic. The system of Czech habitat types is compatible with those delimited in Annex I of the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), a European Union legal instrument for the development of Natura 2000, a network of Special Areas of Conservation whose purpose is the protection of European natural habitats, wild fauna and fl ora. However, unlike the Annex I list, which includes only selected habitats of high conservation value, the Czech system of habitat classifi cation is comprehensive: it contains all major habitat types occurring in the country and enables assignment of any site in the fi eld to a particular habitat type. In some cases, the delimitations of habitat types within Natura 2000 do not refl ect actual patterns of variation observed in the Czech Republic and in fact contrast sharply with traditional systems of vegetation classifi cation used in this country. Therefore the habitat classifi cation presented in this Catalogue has been developed as a compromise between the Natura 2000 system and adequate description of Czech habitat types. It is appropriate for description and management of Czech natural habitats, while remaining unequivocally transferable into the classifi cation used in Natura 2000. |
