Description | The Slovak system of political parties experienced very dynamic development after 1989. The first decade of the 21st century saw relative consolidation of most parties. However, the high dynamics of party competition still continues. The main reason is that despite the currently much bigger significance of the socio-economic cleavage than in the 1990s, there are still other significant cleavages at work in Slovak politics whose intensity is moreover variable. This is demonstrated by the increase in the nationalistic cleavage after the 2006 elections, and the simultaneous reduction of the significance of the state versus church cleavage which had been increasing until then. |
