Description In syntax, there are two principles for building up sentence structure: dependency and constituency. The article demonstrates that students of German as a foreign language could deduce certain facts of word order, especially the verb-final position in German embedded clauses, directly from a phrase structure representation, while they need additional rules when using a dependency representation. Nevertheless, I refrain from unequivocally recommending the use of phrase-structure grammars for German as a foreign language. Drawing on both types of syntactic modeling might be helpful, as long as there is no uncontrolled mixing of both principles.
