Description | This chapter addresses the relationship of official culture to artistic expression on the periphery, in particular issues of aesthetic evaluation of such works and the social status of its authors. It is based on the Foucauldian idea of absence of oeuvre and on the concept that works which during the twentieth century have been labelled art but, outsider art, naive art, etc. are subversive. The gradual integration of such artefacts into the cultural consciousness and their exhibition contributed substantially to the transformation of the modern definition of art and therefore also expanded the boundaries of European culture. Tracing the fate of the concept of art brut as it was developed by J. Dubuffet and his continuators, the chapter explores the complicated story of analysing art "on the margins" by methods of philosophy, aesthetics and art history and the caveats involved in this enterprise. It concludes with a discussion of the social and ethical issues that arise in connection with the modern understanding of activities of a specific circle of authors who are linked with psychiatric and psychotherapeutic institutions. The text is part of project The present state of Art Brut as the conlusion of a theoretical and historical analysis of the issue. |
