Description Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) belong to persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic compounds with carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. Their amount in the environment rise due to anthropogenic activity. Plants are able to take up, translocate and accumulate these compounds. Lipophilic PAHs and products of their transformation cause a series of metabolic and anatomical-structural changes, e.g. in the integrity of cell membranes and tightly-connected photosynthetic and respiratory processes. Such symptoms and properties (biomarkers) of plants are evaluated, which can indicate the relationship of exposure and potential ecological risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in primary photosynthetic processes as an early indicator of phytotoxic FLT effect. Pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) were cultivated in Reid-York nutrient solution without or with the addition of FLT (0, 0.1, 1 and 5 mg/L) for 20 and 27 days. The presence of FLT in plant tissues caused changes not only at subcellular level (content and ratio of photosynthetic pigments, decrease of efficiency of primary photosynthetic processes), but also the decrease of biomass production.
