Description During recent surveys of helminth parasites of marine fishes off New Caledonia, South Pacific, twenty specimens of conspecific monogeneans were recovered from the oesophagus of the deep sea fish Hoplichthys citrinus collected in the region of the Chesterfield Islands. The found specimens were assigned to dactylogyrids belonging to so-called “diplectanotrema-group” based on the presence of the following features: thin tegument, well-developed head organs, intestinal caeca with lateral diverticula, and vitelline follicles arranged into transversely elongated lobes. Comparative morphometrical study showed that the found monogeneans are identical with Paradiplectanotrema lepidopi from Lepidopus caudatus. However, re-examination of the type specimens of Diplectanotrema balistes, Pseudempleurosoma carangis and vouchers of P. lepidopi showed that the type species of these genera share many more common features than it was believed earlier, and therefore it is likely that all these genera are synonyms.
