Description | Oral and perioral pigmentation may be physiologic or pathologic in origin. In most patients these changes are manifestations of normal colour variations or harmless benign lesions. In others they may represent systemic illnesses, premalignant lesions, or even one of the most aggressive tumours - malignant melanoma. Pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa can be classified clinically as solitary focal pigmentation, multifocal and sometimes diffuse macular pigmentation. Solitary lesions include amalgam pigmentation, the oral and labial melanotic macule, oral melanocytic nevus, oral melanoacanthoma and oral melanoma. Multifocal and diffuse macular pigmentation include racial pigmentation, smoking-associated melanosis, drug-induced melanosis, heavy metal pigmentation, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and Addison's disease. |
