Description | We have designed and developed a new telemetry system called BAARA (Biological AutomAted RAdiotelemetry system). It consists of two principal components - a tag with transmitter and a tracking station. A set of the tracking stations is deployed in target area and after installation each station picks up signals from transmitters and estimates a distance and direction to the tagged animal. The station is capable to track theoretically unlimited number of transmitters on different frequencies. Limit of standard tracking has always been a sample size, i.e. the number of simultaneously tracked individuals. The system BAARA allows automatic tracking theoretically unlimited number of individuals. Advantages of the system lie mainly in the possibility of obtaining a large number of locations with a minimum number of human observers, compared with manual radiotracking. Less busy human observers can do control and calibration measurements, check shelters and frequently visited sites or tag new animals. Obtaining a large number of locations can help map and interpret the otherwise rare behaviour that was previously unreported. |
