Description | The patellofemoral joint is a very important part of the knee joint and the extensor apparatus of the lower extremity. It is often difficult to identify the cause of pain of the patellofemoral joint. Problems occur most frequently in young and active patients. However, in spite of the high incidence, to find the etiology of pain and to treat the patellofemoral joint disease correctly is not always easy. Chronic patellofemoral instability is in fact a disorder which can highly limit patients everyday activity. The patellofemoral joint has a low degree of congruence. It causes the patella susceptible to dislocation. Patella stability is ensured by active and passive restraints. The passive stability is given by the congruence of joint and by patellofemoral ligaments. Less important active stability is provided by muscles. Causation of instability must be determined and consequently targetedly treated. |
