Description | The author of the essay describes the way that the French Thomist Jacques Maritain's work spread to Czech and Slovak philosophy. The most prominent proponents of his work were Christian philosophers, neo-Thomists, who published his substantial works as well as minor social, political and art-theoretical essays in journals Na hlubinu, Filosofická revue and Akord. From 1930s Maritain encouraged Catholics in his essays to resist totalitarian regimes, spread Christian social values and establish a just society – Christian humanism. After 1948 Maritain's voice was silenced for several decades and his work only returned to Czech culture in 1990s thanks to the Czech Society of J. Maritain. |
