Description | There are differences between the sexes in occurrence, clinical appearance, progress and treatment of depression. In addition, women suffer from certain specific forms of depression. Symptoms of depression may occur due to premenstrual dysphoric disorder, during the perinatal period and also during the menopausal period. The therapeutic approaches include not only antidepressants, but also hormone therapy. For treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, ADs of the serotonin specific reuptake inhibitor type are preferred, hormone therapy is usually considered if ADs fail to bring results. For treatment of depression during pregnancy, SSRIs are usually used. the treatment is particularly suitable in women with history of depression, because a relapse of depression during pregnancy can be more harmful to the child than administering the ADs. When treating depressions during the menopausal period, AD based therapy is often augmented by hormone replacement therapy. Recommendations based on the current level of knowledge are not yet sufficient enough to support including the differences between sexes into standard treatment recommendations for depression. |
