| Description | This thesis analyses Spanish fiction from a sociological perspective. Drawing on Bourdieu’s notion of ‘field’ and Althusser’s ‘ideological unconscious’, the aim of the thesis is to observe how the point of view of the literary field, always intersected by ideology, has a decisive effect on the social conditions of possibility of literary artefacts. Accordingly, in relation to the genesis of a novel, the analysis focuses on the following factors: the gender, social origin and position of its author and his / her position within the literary field. These factors result in systems of social classification and perception. The central focus of the research is the analysis of the forms of subjectivity produced by the novels selected. How those ‘subjects’ are represented is determined by the effect of those systems of social perception. Within the novels selected for analysis, gender issues, such as the representation of the female body, are emphasized. Both authors, Miguel Espinosa (1926-1982) and Juan Marsé (b. 1933), lived through Franco’s Regime up to the transition to democracy. The dynamics of the literary field plays an important role in the internal logic of their novels. Needless to say that research reads the novels as decisively marked by the social formation in which they were produced. |
