Description The Caucasus (as "Ecoregion No. 24" by Illies 1978) undoubtedly represents a unique "cross-road" from the biogeographical point of view. Based on the ongoing project No. 206/08/1389 by the Czech Science Foundation, approximately 150 localities in this area have been thoroughly investigated in 2008-2011. Taking into account also literature data, 72 species (of 10 families and 19 genera) are announced from there. Our analysis tends to (i) confirm/refuse earlier data (e.g., doubtful occurrence of Ameletus inopinatus or Ephemera vulgata); (ii) resolve taxonomical position of some poorly known species; (iii) definitively define a degree of endemism (e.g., more than 15-20 endemic species of Electrogena and Rhithrogena); (iv) introduce new data on the mayfly occurrence (e.g., westernmost findings of Cinygmula); (v) determine environmental factors governing a distribution of selected (at least most frequent) species and finally, (vi) try to compile a contemporary check-list of the respective mayfly fauna.
