Description | New media and their distribution among the population is placing new demands on developing skills necessary for life in the information society and for the use of ICT. Literacy for use of new media puts new light on the concepts characterizing the competencies which stood side by side, or were collectively known as information literacy so far. In the new concept of media literacy, which takes into account the specific requirements of the new media, media literacy can be considered as an umbrella term that incorporates information literacy, functional literacy, and other social-communication skills necessary for life in the information society. The pyramid of competencies defined by Philipp Mayring includes competencies from the technical-instrumental to the critically-reflexive one. In practice, these competencies are primarily abilities to control new media skills, to resist technical attacks, to protect personal data, to be able to communicate in a new environment and also to reflect the negative aspects of new media. Incompetent handling with new media can be shown through growing cases of cybergrooming, sexting or cyberbullying. Prevention of this phenomenon lies mainly in the conscious and critical treatment of new media, but it can only develop education – family and school. Unfortunately, in the Czech Republic, this issue is not yet systematically supported, the Framework Educational Programme for schools does not reflect this issue and activities in this field are individual initiatives of companies or universities. |
