Description The author of the present article deals with the phenomenon of fantasy, an important genre type in contemporary Russian fantastic literature. Fantasy is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of theme or plot; moreover, many fantasy works take place in imaginary worlds where magic is something utterly common. It is important to point out that efforts to break free from the harsh reality and to escape into a different, better world are in fact quite symptomatic for the Russian literature – they are quite noticeable already in the 19th century utopian novels. The author shows a great diversity of present-day Russian fantasy, which is evidenced in works of Nikolay Perumov, Maria Semyonova and "H. L. Oldie", diametrically different authors, with their only common denominator being the fantasticalness. The author comes to the conclusion that the main reason for the Russian fantasy to gain its unique, unmistakable form during not more than twenty years of existence was its ingenious ability to combine Western examples with its very own historical base.
