Faculty of Informatics Film Festival – in cooperation with the LEMMA laboratory

About us

The LEMMA laboratory specialises in large-scale text and multimedia data collection processing and publishing technologies, including film production and postproduction. The laboratory focuses on the development of new technologies based primarily (but not exclusively) on open-source software. LEMMA’s key project is the annual Faculty of Informatics Film Festival.

The festival itself is the outcome of two semesters of work in film courses PV110 Film Discourse Basics and PV113 Audiovisual Artefact Production, both taught by FI teachers, where students produce a motion picture from start to finish, often with no prior experience. Working independently or in small teams, students go through the entire process of making a short film: from creative idea to screenplay and technical script, through production to editing and postproduction. They have to master the roles of screenwriters, directors, camera operators, sound engineers, producers, editors, actors, etc.

The first Film Festival was held in 2001 and capitalised on the possibilities offered by digital video processing, combining it with the needs established during the production of the Všech pět pohromadě CD and the desire on the part of FI students to produce their own films and express themselves through the audio-visual medium. Ten short films were made within the space of one semester, from the author’s original idea, to screenplay, production, digital editing and preparation for the festival.
