Seed plants have a crucial place in our daily life, as food and animal feed, as genetic resources for conservation and diversity of seed stocks. Brassica napus (rapeseed) is the second largest oilseed crop cultivated worldwide, one of the major crops grown in Europe. Rapeseed yield depends on optimal growth conditions for seed production. In the past years and for the next decades, increasing ambient temperatures are expected to impact seed production. High temperatures restrict crop production by impairing fertilization, early fruit development and grain filling. With this proposal we aim to identify the changes in gene expression resulting from increased ambient temperatures during early seed development in Brassica napus by combining transcriptomics analysis (Objective 1) with validation of expression in situ (Objective 2). We aim to develop the panel of biotechnology and breeding methodologies (Objectives 3 and 4) necessary for our research. This project will ultimately uncover and study potential targets for breeding thermotolerant crops grown under suboptimal conditions.
