Natural and man-made hazards, anthropogenic effects and extreme climate change events, are persistently putting the cultural heritage of Europe under pressure, with a daily incremental frequency. After such a disastrous event, it is fundamental creating activities that will address the understanding and revival of economic patterns/networks, social structures, religious and cultural life.
As a matter of fact, in central Italy, between August 2016 and January 2017, series of severe earthquakes caused massive destruction of historic cities. In the city of Accumoli, the earthquake of 2016 destroyed large parts of the historic city centre which dates to 12th century, surrounded by impressive architectural heritage such as the Torre Civica and the Palazzo del Guasto.
For the project ComPaRe, the city of Accumoli has been selected as a case study, to generate transnational awareness of a problem, to look together into the past-present-future, and, above all, to work on solutions as an international community through crowd-sourced data.
Besides, in Accumoli, several scientific institutions, already dealt with conceptual questions about reconstruction of the architectural heritage, but mostly independently from each other. Instead, the project partners specialized in architecture, history of arts and architecture, urban planning, landscape planning, restoration, reconstruction, civil engineering, urban and regional development, economic development, sociology, etc. aim to collaborate with their unique focus and expertise on different aspects of the topic. Partners aim to develop a transdisciplinary teaching and research program for a holistic reconstruction of destroyed urban structures. The partners are signatories of a memorandum of cooperation aimed at development of a school of reconstruction for addressing destroyed urban structures.
The reason of applying for this project is that we see a need for such a school that will establish an educational programme on complex participatory reconstruction of destroyed urban structures to be tested on site and will implement concepts of reconstruction together with students, teachers, local responsible persons, local planners and population. A dialogue with the residents is important in terms of mapping cultural ties, values and functionality of the destroyed buildings in the urban fabric and for understanding their impor
